International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

Burbank Elementary has the distinction of being the first school in Virginia to introduce the International Baccalaureate Program to elementary students. In the past this designation had been reserved for middle and high schools that provide a rigorous academic program for selected students.

At the elementary level the IB program is designed to challenge ALL students to meet a high level of academic performance. Reading, math, and writing are emphasized as tools we must have to foster lifelong learning. Just as we plan and learn together, we will also recognize how much more there is to learn.

We strive to develop a sense of pride in our community, our country and our language, while recognizing that there are other continents, other countries, and other cultures with which we share the world. We prepare students to live in the world, making reading, writing, and mathematics as the tools for learning.

At Burbank, we use the same curriculum that is taught in every Hampton elementary school, but our Programme of Inquiry (POI) provides a special framework of academic excellence and challenge for all our students. To view our POI, please click on a grade level below.

We welcome your participation in our school's program. For more information, please contact Adam Neely, our district IB coordinator, or Lisa Schlickenmeyer, our PYP coordinator, at (757) 825-4642. Visit the International Baccalaureate Organization website at www.ibo.org.

The International Baccalaureate Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
